“A vacation is what you take when you can no longer take what you've been taking,” Earl Wilson
As hard as you’ve been working over the past few months, a “staycation” just may not cut it this year. So what can you do over the next five months to ensure you’ll have the budget to actually get away? Cut back on inessential guilty pleasures. In doing so, you can save over $250 a month – putting you well on your way to a weeklong vacation by August. Visualize the pay-off at the end of the five months – whether it’s you lying on a beach or you climbing a mountain -- and you may find that you have the necessary incentive to make the cutbacks listed below.
Now that you know you can afford your getaway, start looking for vacation specials. The more time you give yourself to look, the better chance you’ll have of finding a real deal. And remember, if you avoid traveling in the summer, chances are you’ll get a better deal during off-peak season in say Costa Rica, Hawaii or Cancun.

I love your ideas on saving money. My local newspaper has a daily list of restaurants, stores and local companies that offer freebies and almost freebies. When a reader learns about a freebie, they email the writer of the article and it is printed in the next days paper. It is amazing how much money you can save with freebies and 2 for 1 deals and discounted items.
I love the power of information that can be found in newspapers and websites such as this one.

I love the idea of making smart trade-offs...you shouldn't feel guilty about a vacation, even in a down economy, and when you've made smart choices to 'earn' it, how much more empowering. Liked this reena!

This definitely put things in perspective for me. I never really thought about how much money I would save if I just cut back on some small unnecessary things!
Cooking dinner instead of going out to eat not only saves money but its great to do with your significant other...good bonding moments arise from making dinner with one another.
thanks for this! Hopefully with all my new tips I can save for my Hawaii honeymoon!
ps. hope to see you soon!

Thought the article was excellent and I am already doing this in my life as my ill health makes me stick to a tight budget to pay for my health needs but I will read it to my kids.

Great article, Reena! Your 7 tips are all realistic adjustments that can be made. Setting a goal and aiming towards the "prize," in this case the dreamed about vacation, is great motivation! Making changes is always much easier when there is something worth it at the end of the road. Thanks for the tips! You rock!
