Cabinet showrooms are built on a comfortable assumption: that the room the cabinets are going into has square corners, plumb walls and a level floor.
Plenty of rooms do. Older houses generally do not, and the gap between a catalog layout and what actually installs cleanly is where a lot of kitchen projects quietly go wrong.
Understanding what that gap involves changes which questions matter when you are choosing.
Why the Catalog Layout Is a Starting Point
A cabinet design produced from measurements taken before demolition is a proposal, not a plan.
Cabinet runs are measured on site after demolition, once the walls are exposed and the real conditions are visible. That second measure is where a design either survives contact with the room or gets adjusted.
What changes it:
- Walls that are out of plumb, so a run that fits at the base does not fit at the top

In a square room with standard dimensions, fillers are narrow and unremarkable. In an older house, a stock cabinet layout can require fillers wide enough to notice, and the run reads as a set of boxes placed in a room rather than cabinetry built for it.

Custom is not automatically the right answer, and there are specific situations where it is the only one that works properly.

- Runs that do not divide into standard widths, avoiding wide fillers
- Awkward geometry, such as angled walls, chimney breasts, or a room that narrows
- Integrating appliances flush, where the cabinetry has to be built around specific dimensions

- Storage designed around how you actually cook, rather than around what the catalog offers

What to Ask a Cabinet Supplier
The showroom conversation is usually about doors and finishes. These are the questions that determine how the kitchen performs.

The second-to-last question is the useful one. A supplier who talks about scribing has installers who do that work. One who talks about fillers is telling you how the run will look where it meets the wall.
None of these questions require any technical background to ask, and the answers separate suppliers quickly.
Sequencing, and Why It Bites
Cabinetry sits in the middle of a chain of dependencies, and getting the order wrong is expensive.
Appliance model numbers come first, because openings are built to specific dimensions. Then the layout. Then the on-site measure after demolition. Then the order, which starts the lead time. Then installation, then countertop template.
The failure mode is ordering before the second measure, to save time. It occasionally works. When it does not, a cabinet that is an inch too wide for the actual wall is a cabinet that has to be modified on site or reordered, and neither is quick.
