Who is One Woman’s Wilderness

Who Is One Woman’s Wilderness? On Friday, March 27th, 2018, a brand-new business was born. This life-changing company is destined to help, heal and inspire those who are seeking something more than the ordinary. The name of this new business is Who Is One Woman’s Wilderness (W1W).

One Woman’s Wilderness is dedicated to the solitary wilderness experiences of Alaska naturalist, artist, and author, Anne LA Bastille.

Anne LA Bastille was born in Seattle, Washington on May 28, 1913 and grew up in the Pacific Northwest. She was a self-described “mountain kid,” spending much of her childhood hiking, camping and exploring in the mountains of Oregon and Washington. She graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in English literature in 1935 and then took a job with Boeing Aircraft Company as an interior designer. She married her husband, Ed LaBastille, in 1936 and they had two children together: Anne Frances (born 1939) and Elliot (born 1942).

A portion of all proceeds from sales of One Woman’s Wilderness merchandise goes to support the work being done by The Wilderness Society to protect wild places across America from industrial development and pollution.

You can find photography, life story, and news on her environmental work.

Anne LA Bastille is an environmentalist and writer, who has been a prominent voice in the wilderness movement for decades. She is the author of two books that have been translated into 14 languages: The Solace of Fierce Landscapes: Exploring Desert and Mountain Spirituality, and One Woman’s Wilderness: The Story of a Pioneer Woman Naturalist.

The Solace of Fierce Landscapes documents her experiences as she traveled through the desert Southwest and the mountain ranges of North America. She describes her encounters with rattlesnakes, mountain lions, scorpions, coyotes and other animals with whom she felt a bond.

One Woman’s Wilderness tells the story of Anne LA Bastille’s life as a pioneer woman naturalist. It describes how she grew up in the 1950s in rural Maine, where she learned about nature by hiking through the woods with her father and grandfather. Her passion for nature led her to study ornithology at Cornell University followed by graduate work at Stanford University where she became one of only two women to earn a PhD in wildlife biology from UC Davis’ College of Biological Sciences.

Anne LaBastille was a woman ahead of her time, who lived an extraordinary life in the wilds of New York State. In this inspiring film, we follow her story from her early days as a social worker to her later years as an environmentalist, conservationist and writer. Over 30 years ago she bought 1,500 acres of land in the Adirondacks and moved there with only a few supplies and one small dog named “Stormie.”

She built herself a cabin and began repairing and rebuilding trails that had been damaged by erosion or overgrown with brush. She became known as “The Hermit” because she rarely left her property and never accepted visitors.

One Woman’s Wilderness is an intimate portrait of Anne LaBastille told through interviews with those who knew her best including family members, friends, admirers and environmentalists such as Bill McKibben (author/activist), Gary Snyder (poet), Wendell Berry (writer) and David Brower (environmentalist).

Anne LaBastille’s book, “Woodswoman”, inspired thousands of women around the world to live in the wilderness.

Anne LaBastille was born in 1929 on a dairy farm near Watertown, New York. She grew up surrounded by nature and developed a passion for the outdoors at an early age. In 1959 she moved to California with her husband, Bill, and their three children. While running a nursery business, Anne wrote her first book, Woodswoman: The Story of Anne LaBastille (1962). The book described how she lived alone in a cabin in the Sierras while caring for two children under five years old. It was an instant success and sold over 100,000 copies within two years.

Throughout her life Anne LaBastille was an avid hiker and camper who used her experiences as inspiration for more books including The Woman Who Walked Into the Wilderness (1963), Woman Alone: Wilderness Narratives from North America (1969), Women Who Run With Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype (1992) and Wild Child: Girlhoods In Nature (1997).
