The Increasing Trend Of Women In Manufacturing

The demand for skilled workers in manufacturing is high. There may be some 2.1 million manufacturing jobs left unfilled through 2030, according to a report from CNN Business, and that dearth could cost the economy nearly $1 trillion in revenue lost. 

The forecast may not be all doom and gloom, however, as the industry may be getting a serious influx of new workers from a new source—women. Today, we’ll be taking a look at recent trends that have poised women for a serious expansion into the manufacturing world, and examine how an increase of women in manufacturing roles can be of benefit to all.

Women In The (Manufacturing) Workplace

First, let’s take a look at some hard facts. While it’s true that the manufacturing industry has amazing potential for those who want to work, and women now make up nearly half of the overall workforce in the United States, they’re still only 30% of the total manufacturing workforce. What’s more, according to the US Department of Commerce, is that only one-in-four leadership positions in manufacturing are held by women, and the median female manufacturing worker earns only 72% of what their male counterparts do.

What accounts for such traditionally low percentages of women in manufacturing? The pay disparity and lack of advancement is one critical issue, and it’s usually combined with less-than-favorable working conditions, as described by this 2018 report in Forbes:

“Women face hostile and even dangerous conditions in factories where they are trailblazers representing a small percentage of the workforce.  Common complaints are that there is ‘locker room’ talk and a ‘macho culture’ that is part of the work environment. While women are more likely to be the targets of harassment, they’re also less likely to report.”

In spite of all the factors working against them, though, it’s clear that women can contribute much to the industry. This is particularly true where that looming skills gap is concerned, and cutting edge manufacturers like Fictiv, Deloitte, and FABTECH have taken notice. To that end, there are some practical steps that companies can take to woo female talent, and it all starts with laying the groundwork at high schools and colleges. 

School is where future workers and leaders are made. Presenting young women with pathways to worthwhile manufacturing careers—through mentorship and other programs—is a promising strategy for boosting their numbers within the field. In addition to deliberate efforts to increase STEM education among women, manufacturers will also need to examine how to keep any newly acquired talent from leaving for greener pastures.

Addressing the pay disparity between women and men will be part of the solution, but it will also take an effort to address the lack of work-life balance that’s typical of the industry, improve working relationships between female and male staff, and keep female employees engaged through challenging assignments and potential advancement. Combined, these factors should help address the predicted shortage of workers while simultaneously integrating the much-needed female talent that the manufacturing industry needs to thrive.

Wrapping Up

Women might not represent the bulk of manufacturing at present, but their time is on the horizon. Savvy manufacturers will get ahead of the curve by providing opportunities for women within their workplaces, and helping female employees thrive as they continue to adapt to whatever the future may hold.

It’s no secret that men and women, on average, are different. For example, says Psychology Today, men are more likely to zero in on a single problem, whereas women are more likely to attempt to multitask. Many women feel the same, and for these reasons gravitate toward those slick curves and precision engineering found in just about every Mercedes model. Particularly affordable models, such as the Mercedes Benz E Class, tend to t get a lot of interested female buyers.

Audi

In a similar vein, most Audi models are attractive to female car buyers for the same reasons that Mercedes are. On top of the looks and the luxury, however, Audi has been garnering a reputation for producing solid automobiles with stellar driving dynamics and excellent in-vehicle technology. Seems gadgetry appeals to the female audience as well, no?

Volkswagen

Volkswagen appealing to female buyers? This should come as no surprise, as the female demographic, as shown by many of the other examples on this list, can be persuaded with good-looking vehicles and small, practical vehicles. Volkswagen checks both of these boxes with many of their offerings, and the result is that women are 56% more likely to buy a Volkswagen automobile than men.

What are the essential considerations when sitting down to plan a new trip? For many people, the destination comes first. It makes sense. 1. Search for Travel Essentials

The most shocking thing about traveling with children is how much they can accrue; from clothes, diaper bags, and strollers to toys and pacifiers, your child may probably do with an entire plane to themselves to accommodate all of that luggage.

Since that will not happen, you need first to understand the world of new baby products. Is there something to help lighten the load?

Next, think about the things you absolutely need, such as diaper bags, strollers, clothing, medications, feeding supplies, and some toys. Once you’ve got your head in these necessities, the wrapping shouldn’t be too intimidating.

2. Limit Your Travel Plans to Popular Destinations

Compared to remote areas, popular resorts are more likely to have hotels and activities for children. You can also explore more popular places, read reviews, and find out what activities you’ll be doing during your visit.

3. Pack Lightly

Dragging luggage is a headache for parents on vacation. Packaging light means packaging smart. Follow these simple suitcase rules to reduce your vacation luggage.

  • Cut back on clothing. Whether it’s a personal trip or a family trip, clothes take up the most space in your suitcase. Plan to wash the clothes and each person packs 3 or 4 sets of mixed clothes. In addition, to save space, avoid packing bulky clothes as much as possible.
  • Purchase the required items upon arrival. Diapers, wipes, shampoos, other hygiene products and snacks can all be purchased when you arrive at your destination to save storage space on the go. By buying only what you need, you don’t even have to bring back any supplies. List the things you need, and your purchases will be limited in the blink of an eye.

4. Always Have a Backup Plan

As a parent, whether you’re on vacation, shopping, or just planning an afternoon activity, you’ll find that it’s best to have a backup plan. Indeed, you certainly live your life with a backup plan.

Be sure to consider alternative activities that can be replaced, as weather, illness, and childhood troubles can quickly change your plans. You can also consider white water rafting as a cool family activity.

5. Invest in Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can protect your family from accidental disasters while on vacation. As long as you know you’re prepared for an emergency, you can reduce the stress of your family vacation and make it more enjoyable. You can purchase travel insurance to cover domestic and international travel, cover the entire year, or protect a single trip. Flight and cruise insurance is also provided. You can purchase an insurance policy that covers non-medical conditions (such as trip cancellation). This is one of the most common questions asked among boaters. There are many options out there, everything from traditional zinc anodes to prop speed reducers to stainless steel driveshafts. It can be overwhelming trying to find which option is best for you.

When choosing equipment for corrosion protection on your boat’s drive, there are several things you need to take into consideration:

Location and Installation – Where is your drive, and how is it installed? This will determine which options are available to you.

What Type of Water Do You Typically Boat In? – Salt vs. Fresh, Cold vs. Warm, etc.? This will help determine the appropriate metals for your specific application.

How Fast Do You Typically Go? – Cruising speed, racing speeds, etc.? This will help determine the appropriate equipment for your specific application.

Budget – How much money do you want to allocate for corrosion protection? This will help determine which options are available to you.

What Type of Anti-fouling Paint Do You Use? – Different types of paint require different types of protection. This will determine the compatibility and effectiveness of your chosen option.

Zinc Electrolytic Anodes

Zinc anodes are best used when you are constantly surrounded by water, such as when you’re traveling by your boat in saltwater or freshwater with high levels of chlorides or sulfates. They work great on many types of ballast tanks.

Prop Speed Reducers/Silencers

A prop speed reducer (also called a “silencer”) is installed at the end of your driveshaft and slows down the speed of your propeller. It does this through a mechanical process in which the energy in forwarding motion is turned into heat.

A prop speed reducer is perfect for boats that spend time in saltwater but do not necessarily need anodes if they are using anti-fouling paint that is not compatible with stainless steel.

Steel Anodes

Steel is best used when you are constantly surrounded by water, such as when traveling by your boat in saltwater or freshwater with high levels of chlorides or sulfates. While steel anodes are not necessarily required for boats only used in freshwater, they can still provide excellent corrosion protection to your drive if desired.

Zinc/Aluminum Anodes

Zinc and aluminum are the most common types of sacrificial anodes used when boats spend time in saltwater. They are also effective when used in freshwater or chlorides if you’re using anti-fouling paint incompatible with stainless steel.

Silver Anodes

Silver anodes produce silver oxide that provides cathodic protection to the underwater metals in your boat. Silver anodes are only effective if you’re using aluminum propellers and spend time in salt water with high levels of chlorides or sulfates.

Aluminum Boot Stripe for Painted Surfaces

Aluminum boot stripes work by providing a “sacrificial” surface that corrodes instead of the metals below the boot stripe. The corrosion then produces a black oxide that camouflages the boat’s metal parts and reduces the need for future painting.

Boot stripes work effectively in both saltwater and freshwater. While they are not required when your boat spends time in saltwater, they can provide excellent corrosion protection to aluminum propellers if installed properly.
