If you’re like most households, then the laundry room is the hub of your family activities. This is where you likely spend quite a bit of time sorting, washing, drying, folding, and sorting again so that everyone can have clean clothes to wear and fresh linens on their beds. However, it might not be the most organized room in your home. Here are a few tips that can help you achieve better organization so that everything functions smoothly.
1- Racks
If you don’t have anywhere specific to store blankets and sheets, then consider installing a rack on one wall with a shelf that flips down. When you take these items to their designated place in your home or when someone needs an extra blanket or sheet, you know where they are located. This feature can also help to keep linens separated from towels and clothes.
2- Drying Bar
There are some items that you might not want to dry in the dryer. A bar placed on one wall that allows for enough space underneath for clothes to freely hang can keep clothes from shrinking and can help to dry items that are still a bit damp. This is also beneficial for smaller items that you don’t need to put in the dryer, such as socks or underwear.
3- Ironing
Some articles of clothing might need to be ironed before they are hung in your closet. Instead of getting out a large board and setting it up in a different room, consider installing a built-in ironing board that flips down when it’s needed. You can also put a hook on the wall next to it to hold a lightweight iron so that everything is in one place.
4- Supply Wall
Keep everything that you need to wash and dry clothes in one place with a supply wall. It can be as big as you need it to be to hold softener, detergent, dryer sheets, and special items for your whites and clothes that have tough stains. Wire shelves work well for this project, and there are usually units available that are adjustable so that you can store items of all sizes.
5- Know Your Stains
It’s almost inevitable that something that your family wears will get stains on it at some point. Instead of searching online for the correct way to wash each piece of clothing, hang a stain chart on one wall of your laundry room. All you have to do is look at the type of fabric that the stain is on and the best products that can be used to remove it so that the fabric is protected.
6- Separation
Before you wash your clothes, you want to separate them by color and possibly by fabric in order to protect them from any kind of damage while they are in the washer or dryer. A simple three-piece hamper can make it easy to separate whites, darks, and delicates so that you know what kind of detergent to use and what temperature to use for the washer and dryer.
7- Lint Box
When you clean out your dryer, you might discover a roll of lint that looks more like a burrito. Hang a small box with a bag inside to collect all of the lint and tiny pieces of paper that might hide in pockets so that you don’t spend a lot of time running to the trash can when you’re folding clothes.
